I wish to share with you my latest addition to my new collection that will be launched at the end of this month.

This floor length dress is made out of batik fabric and it gives a light and refreshing feeling when you wear it.

I love the fabric’s pattern; the beautiful shades that resemblances marble as well as the "drops" in green and caramel colours. The necklace is made out of flat sweet water pearls coloured in a golden shade.

Yesterday, on a beautiful sunny day, I had the pleasure and excitement to organize a photo session with some of my latest outfits; a part of my five year anniversary collection.
The location I needed had to have a minimalist, clean and straight architecture and happily, two weeks before the shoot, I received a written allowance to use some rooms, halls and surroundings of Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg: "A conspicuous museum building (architect: Heinz Tesar) on the edge of the Danube water meadows in Klosterneuburg near Vienna is the home to Austria’s biggest private collection of modern art. The collection of contemporary art belonging to Agnes and Karlheinz Essl has over 7,000 works and offers an incomparable insight into present-day art." (www.wien.info)

When we arrived, we received a warm welcome from the chief of the marketing department, Barbara Royc. She showed us around of the museum, what exactly we could use and what not. I was deeply impressed by her unconditional support!

My team has been amazing! The model, Nadia has been extremely enthusiastic, dynamic and helpful. Nadia’s husband, Thomas was very supportive and every time we needed something, he was ready to help. The makeup artist, Kamila followed exactly my wishes and I love the result; the photographer is my most favorite!

In about three weeks I’ll publish the photos here and on my website.

Happy to receive good news from Romania! Three of my bags have been published in the new released Story Book and in Unica, a magazine that I constantly read with pleasure since about 15 years.
It wasn’t easy to get them in my hands, it took a couple of weeks but with the help of few of my good friends as well Unica’s assistant chief editor, Laura Davidescu now I can see them in real.

Custom Bridal Clutch

I find that having a bag at your wedding is a practical choice and its style/design should perfectly match the dress. Many brides find it unnecessary but I think that it is great to have something to store in your cell, lip gloss, something blue, tissues (in case you’ll shed some tears or get cream on your face from the wedding cake).

Having a clutch, you can wear it under your arm without any inconvenience or you can always trust your mum or nearest friend to hold it for you during the religious or official ceremony.

I never liked the round, pear shaped bridal sacks with a string or loop hanging by the little finger or hand’s wrist. If it’s well done in a couture art, then it is ok but most that I’ve seen looked cheap, kitschy; simply hideous.
The bag should be a part of the outfit, an element that perfectly blends in with all the details and accessories: shoes, head piece/veil, jewels, flowers bouquet etc. Or when the dress and bag are done, the rest of the adornments should be picked by taking them first in consideration.
I appreciated that Claire took my advice by having her clutch made from the same fabric as the dress. Later, I came with the idea to embellish it with matching antique lace that partially came on the dress.

I took the courage to sew in a brown zipper and happily Claire agreed! I chose brown to come close to the shoes colour tone. I love a bit of colour on a bridal ensemble, just plain white allover (white dress, white bag, white shoes, white veil, white roses) is too boring…

Claire Morgan’s Wedding Gown, Part III

One day after the wedding celebration ended, Claire and Pawel shoot their wedding portraits. I love their ideas, locations and originality! They act so naturally, so much in love and warm despite outside were few degrees Celsius above 0.

I admire the fact that Claire made the very best of her dress, she didn’t hesitate to jump, dance, sit on the floor… together with Pawel she brought out Vienna’s beauties and traditions.

Claire Morgan’s Wedding Gown, Part II

When we arrived at the wedding location, the union ceremony was over but my sad feeling was almost instantly replaced by a flood of smiles and compliments coming from the guest ladies. They all loved Claire’s gown and I knew that their sincere admiration was high because they didn’t know me at all but felt free to come and speak to me. Nadia Danecek is one of them, after we talked we remained in contact and will collaborate in a couple of projects. Everyone was so warm and friendly; despite I’ve met few of Claire’s friends before I didn’t know the majority and my husband only Claire and Pawel… we felt welcomed, cozy, happy and relaxed.

After the ceremony, the guests were celebrating with a glass of champagne in the Atrium salon then the reception took place in the Spectacula dining hall. Everything looked like a true dream; the love for details was impressive! She is such a creative, talented person, a true inspiration for many!

Pawel held the first toast of the evening and in his speech I was beautifully mentioned and thanked. That brought me some tears… He thanked as well their friends, family and team that gave their love and support to make everything possible. So nice!

The next morning, I woke up with a big smile on my face! I was so happy, pleased as well relieved…
Claire is one of the best wedding photographers based in Austria and after seeing so many weddings she knew that she wanted the best for her own. I was delighted to know that I stood by her standards.

She offered me a wonderful present and wrote me a very touching thank you card. I was very impressed...

Claire Morgan’s Wedding Gown, Part I

A week before the wedding date, we had a third fitting, more like a review of the whole outfit that includes the dress, clutch, shoes, head flower and jewelry. Claire was happy to have this last revision because her mother was not with her at the first and second fitting as she lives in South Africa and was arriving about three weeks before the wedding day. We then decided to add same vintage lace (that was sewn on the clutch) around the waist band, as well. A belt was not a good idea as it fits best on a straight, tight dress.
So, I’ve sewn the last details and kept the dress until the wedding day.

I was extremely nervous the night before, it is a big responsibility to hold someone else's wedding dress until the last minute… but I wanted to take part in the preparations and help Claire to have the dress freshly ironed and dressed in the right way.
The arrangements (hair, make-up, dressing up) took place in one of the hotel suites of the 25 Hours Hotel and when I arrived, helped by Claire's sister to carry my ironing board and dress’s package, I was fascinated by the wonderful view and cheerful atmosphere. Claire was very relaxed, her family and friends gladly helped me to organize myself so everything went smooth and enjoyable.

After I saw that Claire is ready to go, I went back to my atelier to finish my dress for the reception. As my highest priority was the bride the most important was to see her looking gorgeous and pleased. My dress took quite long to be done, I knew that it is important to wear it as most of the guests would have looked at my outfit.

Unfortunately we missed the beginning of the wedding, I would have loved to see Pawel’s (Claire’s husband) expression at her arrival… but I am happy to have the wonderful photos!

"Mr. Right" by Christiana Uikiza

Two days ago, Christiana Uikiza recorded four video clips that will be displayed on her website. I will write more about the website and the new album when they will be launched, looking forward!
To each video clip, she chose an outfit that represents the message and spirit of the song.
For Mr. Right, Christiana came with a concept of a 50s dress that I very much like and find in true harmony with the sound and lyrics.

The fabric she chose is a very nice silk in a beautiful fuchsia shade. The oversized petals are doubled with a black colour silk, additionally I’ve made a wide elastic belt that accentuates the waist.

Bold Fringes

I first got to know Nadia Danecek at Claire’s Morgan wedding. She approached me to compliment the bride’s dress and asked if I would like to work a fabric that she has received from her beloved grandfather.
The fabric is brought from Yemen from the time when her grandparents were living there. As far as I understood, her grandfather has been working there and her grandmother loved to sew and bought many nice garments. I’ve already seen the fabric and I’m looking forward making something nice out of it!
In the meantime, I’ve made a dress that Nadia wanted to wear at a recent birthday celebration of her grandfather, in Moscow. She asked me if I have some similar fringes to Claire’s dress and I could find in a nice green shade.
We both liked the result!

Riding Horses

I love all animals (with few exceptions: snakes and crustaceans which also include spiders) and I am a big fan of horses. When I first got to know Monica Duben Pribitzer I was happy to find out that she owns one. I’m looking forward getting to know it in the spring time when the weather will be kinder and the mud in the stable less.
A couple of weeks ago, Monika brought me a bag made out of a fabric with a horses and harness symbols pattern. As the bag was very simple and small she wanted it more spacious with a clean, classic line.
She had it opened at home and I used the fabric’s piece as a front part of a bigger bag. For the back side we’ve chosen a leather colour that nicely matches with the fabric’s pattern.

Viennese Artistic Glazing: Neuglas, Part I

In the year of 2006 when I first opened my atelier in the Spittelberg area of Vienna, I’ve slowly began to discover how many creative studios, ateliers or workshops are in the surroundings. On my daily way to get lunch I couldn’t stop noticing a very interesting shop and atelier. For few seconds, depending on my walking speed, I always saw inside through the glass front a lady that was constantly working at a huge table all covered in wonderful glass pieces. Every time I was passing by she was fully focused on the work, her upper side of her back was bended over the table and her eyes at close distance to her working material. Soon after, as I was working myself long hours into the night and weekends, I’ve noticed that the lady from the glass atelier was also working as much or even more than I did.

Two years later, while visiting an arts and crafts open air market in Spittelberg, I saw the presentation station of this glass small company, Neuglas. I’ve asked my back then boyfriend (now husbad) Patrick, to stop and have a closer look. I instantly liked a pair of transparent, deep blue glass earrings and bought them with pleasure. I took the chance to talk to the glass designer, the lady that I saw through the window, working with so much dedication. She presented herself as Marcela Arvinte and her partner, Markus Berger and told me that she also noticed my atelier, as well heard me talking to a girlfriend in Romanian as she is as well Romanian.
Ever since, we’ve stayed in contact and participated together to different arts events. Even if I moved my atelier’s address two years ago, I take the chance when I’m in that area to visit them. It’s always a pleasure to be in their atelier and chat over our work and professional achievements.

In my next post, I will present you their story, working place, materials, techniques and products.

One week ago, I borrowed some of their items to photograph and show you their latest glass design in miniature size: accessories such as earrings and necklaces. I love the colour combinations and geometrical shapes as they bring a touch of originality to any outfit! Every piece is hand-made, the earrings have silver or silver plated closure and the necklaces are nickel free.

Christiana Uikiza

I know Christiana since about 4 years and I’ve always admired her musical talent, amazing voice, professional aspirations and strong desire to perfect herself. Every time I listen to her live performances I get goose skin! It’s hard to describe her as an artist because words won’t be enough but very soon you will have the chance to discover her (if you didn’t do that yet). Her long awaited second album will be released this spring and happily I was one of the few privileged people that could already hear it and obtain the first impressions.

The atmosphere was very warm, arty, musical and cozy… she prepared home-made pancakes filled with a poppy seeds cream (delicious!) and were served with a wonderful, specially made white wine.

The album is arranged and produced by Joe Meixner, in case you don’t know yet, he is one of the most magnificent Austrian pianists. The music is composed by Christiana Uikiza and Joe Meixner, the lyrics are written by Christiana Uikiza; in other assignments three multiple Grammy awarded artists took part in accomplishing an absolutely refreshing, individual and elaborate music album.
I will write more about all the details as soon as everything will be set: launching date, website etc.

While listening to the songs I was touched by joy, pleasure, charm and rhythm! With every song I was going through different emotions and that makes it so special: the blend of styles.

A couple of weeks ago, my atelier was recommended to a very nice, young lady that wanted to do some major changes on a mink fur coat. She has tried to find some solutions at professional fur makers but they were too pricey. I never buy fur but when I get a vintage piece on my hands I like to work it mostly in combination with leather. The results are always exciting! Every time I’ve got unique pieces mostly made in Austria and the customers are happy to have something rare.

Bettina’s coat was a wonderful piece that belonged to her grandmother. Fitting for that time, I would estimate the 50s, the design was beautiful. The coat’s length was 3/4, very wide on the lower part with narrow shoulders, small collar and puffy sleeves gathered in small cuffs.

I can’t work any type of fur, I first need to have a look at its softness (time can make fur stiff), thickness of the leather and most important check the “health” state: no hair falling, no worms or eggs, no molding or dust.

This coat was a pleasure to have; the inside was in perfect condition, the odour was almost inexistent and the bindings were done by real masters. So, I loved it!
Bettina wanted to have a jacket that she can wear with casual outfits (jeans, leggings and blouses) as well a good option for elegant evenings.

In the first step, I cut approximately 40cm off the length, got rid of the extra lining (it had three layers), narrowed the seams on the sides, back and sleeves. Then I lengthened the sleeves cuffs as the original sleeves short by 6cm. I worked on the lining and closed the open areas.

In the second step I did three accessories from the remaining fur. As I wanted to achieve to make the most of the left fur, I had to find the best way to keep all the pieces as rectangular as possible without losing too many centimeters. The original cut was curved following the coat's design.

Bettina wanted very much a handbag. So I suggested a shopper made in a combination with caramel colour leather. She loved the idea and we continued planning a wristlet and a pillow cover.

The back side of the pillow case has a suede optic fabric that fits very nice and the wristlet is made in combination with dark brown goat leather.

Shoulders Fringes Dress for Claire’s Hen Night

Two days before the wedding, Claire together with seventeen girlfriends celebrated in a burlesque style her pre-last night as a fiancé. The event was organized by Anika, one of Claire’s friends and the evening’s highlight was a workshop held in the First American Bar where the girls had a lot of fun learning how to style, dance and act. I'm sorry I couldn't make it but the upcoming wedding was making me as nervous as the bride was and I wanted to catch some sleep to be able to focus on the final touches of her gown.

Claire decided to buy and wear one of my dresses that I personally like very much but it took a couple of months to find its owner as the slim line can be a sensitive matter. As Claire is a yoga fan, she loved the dress right away and felt confident wearing it. She wasn’t wrong as she looked and felt great and we both received many compliments.

As I couldn’t find any of those fringes in black colour, Claire is lucky to have this last dress (I’ve only made 2, one short and one ¾). But I’ve ordered some in a light colour (cream/beige) and I’m looking forward doing some new pieces :)

About 8 months ago, I have received with great pleasure Claire’s offer to make her wedding gown. She’s a very calm person and despite I usually don’t make wedding gowns, her positive energy and patience convinced me to start the project. I know her since about three years and the biggest challenge was to know that being one of the best Austria based wedding photographers her outfit will be under scrutiny for a long time in the future. One of the biggest problems doing a custom outfit is that most of the times, women would change their mind regarding the design, in the last moment. So, to avoid such unfortunate situations, I only do custom work to a very limited number of customers.
Claire is a very well decided person, she always knew what she wanted and when she’s set on something she goes with it. Throughout the working process, we had a great communication; she was extremely punctual, serious and kind! Every time there were questions from both sides, we tried to respond them efficiently and comprehensible. So, my work was smooth and filled with joy and satisfaction.

Claire’s choice for the gown’s colour is a statement of her corporate design and I loved the idea of having an unconventional shade, a powdery rosé, offering an elegant, vintage flair. Together with Claire’s friend Anika we’ve set for a very pale shade for the silk taft and a drop of a darker one for the organza layer.

The first fitting was a success. Claire was joined by her friend, Skye, and I loved to see their excitement when I unveiled the tailoring mannequin and displayed the gown! With an exception of 2 cm everything matched perfectly, even the length! So I only had to tighten her waist and finish the open seams.
Many customers visiting my atelier were impressed by the dress, colour and her small waist :)

During my visit in New York, I had the pleasure to be invited for the first time in America at a local trunk show, by designer Astrid Brucker. Her label, astridland, is an eclectic cultural and social mix influenced by different time periods as the epitome of modern chic.

The place holding the event, Gesamtkunstwerk is a very creative boutique, art gallery and workshop based on Clinton Street, in the LES. Entering the boutique I could instantly smell and see creativity, fashion, art and style. I very much enjoyed the cozy ambiance as well could feel like home, when Astrid and one of the shop owners, Allie were greeting me warmly and showed me around. I could admire accessories, handbags, dresses, jewelries, paintings and ceramic art, everything skillfully handmade.

When entering the shop, I could notice the German name Gesamtkunstwerk and asked Allie a bit about the idea using it in New York:
"Werk represents a constantly changing selection of over twenty different working artists and designers, concentrating mainly on locally handmade goods, but also showcasing handmade work from Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Paris and Barcelona. The products range from one-of-a-kind jewelry to quirky stationary, silk-screened T-shirts and paintings. Because the store focuses on designers working here in New York, the space becomes a permanent home for “werkers” that usually migrate between different craft and design fairs. Christmas Event in My Atelier

Last Saturday, 17.12., I organized a Christmas Shopping day in my atelier. As guest designers, I decided to invite two of my recent favorite ones, Charity Akuma and Gabriele Rigby. Charity is a jewelry designer, freshly established on the Viennese market (I will soon write a post about her work) and Gabriele is working under the label Fröhlich, you can see more of her designs on her website.
We had visits from our friends and customers and everyone could find a Christmas present for a dear one. I prepared homemade pastries, sweets and natural citrus punch. The day was beautiful, cozy and relaxed. I will definitely repeat it next it year!

Christmas Event in an Austrian Castle

This weekend I had the pleasure to participate for the second year at an arts and crafts Christmas event in one of the most idyllic locations for such occasions I’ve ever seen. To my pride, I’ve been accepted to be a part of the participant hand-crafters team despite the limited number of open positions. Every time I received a beautiful presentation room with plenty of space and lighting. This year, I’ve been opting to make a collection of table sets such as runners, placemats and cloths.

I had the pleasure to meet about 10 days ago, one of Jeannette’s friends, Mrs. Ghazaleh Karasek-Djananpour to plan the creation of a custom sofa cover. I haven’t sewn anything like this before but I am very excited about it! After we set on all details, she saw some of my handbags and as the birthday of a good friend was in a week from then (exactly on my birthday!) she asked me if I can make a custom wristlet. Something on her friend’s taste and spirit's vibe. I showed her all my leather pieces and combinations and the final result was very well received at the birthday celebration.

I love to attend the celebration organized by the Embassy of Romania, it's very nice organized and makes me proud to be Romanian. Since I'm having the fashion business I am invited every year as I am considered to transport a positive image in the Austrian society. The gala brings together Romanian diplomats, politicians, artists from all fields, doctors, engineers, business and media people. It is a good chance to make new contacts and exchange impressions about living abroad.

This year, the event was held in the festivities hall of the Börse building, the former home of the Viennese Stock Exchange and it was a great choice as the number of guests was much higher than in the previous years.

I first met Louisa Okonye about three years ago when she contacted me and asked to give her a couple of professional tips as she was planning to set up her own fashion label. I am always happy to help, especially when I know I can be useful. She is very determined and soon after our first meeting she started her business. We kept contact ever since and shared our gained experience regarding selling platforms, potential customers, fashion shows or exhibitions.

A couple of weeks ago she called me to gladly tell me that she has a new store, on Lerchenfelder Strasse 44 and proposed me to take some of my bags and show them to her customers. November is a good time especially that before Christmas people offer special presents and as well when celebrating the winter holidays like to match their outfits with an original accessoire. So, it was a great idea and when I had a look at her collection I’ve noticed that many of her dresses fit my designs.

Society Magazine, Autumn/Winter 2011

Yesterday, 25th of November, I had the pleasure and honor to participate at the presentation of the latest issue of Society magazine.

The magazine was first launched in 1945 and is structured on different interests with diverse themes such as economy, politics, diplomacy, science and culture. It’s an excellent combination of national and international society’s statements and I have to admit that it is the first time I’ve ever seen this magazine concept in Vienna.
This fall/winter issue highlights an interesting theme to me: Romania, my home country. Besides the country presentation made on the editorial page, written by Mag. Gertrude Tauchhammer I also had the great pleasure to read a captivating interview with Her Excellency Silvia Davidoiu, Romania Ambassador to Austria.

The interview was taken by Mag. Tanja Tauchhammer and mainly displays the economical and political relations between Austria and Romania, future visions and interestingly to know that officially there are almost 70.000 Romanians living in Austria (personally, I only know about 10-12 Romanians).

After visiting most Europe in the last 15 years, wanting to spend as much of my holidays on the continent, I decided to take a change for my honey-moon trip. My husband opened my curiosity and desire to get to know New York and since a couple of years I couldn’t stop thinking of the trip, especially when watching Law & Order, CSI NY, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest etc. The visa formalities went fast and smooth, to my surprise I was given a 10 year permission to apply for the visa given at the entry on the American territory.
We booked a week for end October - early November and planned our stay: to visit as much as possible especially non touristic neighborhoods and discover interesting places related to our professions (museums, design shops and art galleries). Finding accommodation has been a true nerve wreck as everything we inquired was not available. Our search was focused on finding a clean, cozy, good located studio/apartment. After 10 days of constant search and 8 days before our departure, we happily found something fitting our expectations. Many positive inquiries came minutes after we booked the flat but we were so relieved and excited to start our trip. The rental platform seems safe and the chance to find good and fast accomodation is high.

Shortly before our departure, I’ve got the idea to contact some local fashion designers and ask for insider tips such as fabrics companies, leather suppliers, book stores, art galleries, vintage stores/markets. The best place to find contacts and have a good feeling about it, is Etsy. So, I filtered my search down to NYC artists and chose 10 designers that have personal, beautiful and friendly shops: Sarah (Sarah Leora), Andre (Pantora), Regina (Seven Blooms), Yaeli (Yaelis), Katherine (Designer Deam Closet), Milton (Mescalante). To my positive surprise I’ve received almost instant answers with lists of great tips! So, I greatly thank again to each designer that took time to write and inform me, it has been very helpful! Even more, Sophia (Persine) invited me to join her at a vintage market in Brooklyn and Astrid (Astrid Land) invited me to her trunk show held at Gesamtkunstwerk. It was nice to know that people that I don’t know in person can be so friendly!

The travel has been really tiring (we took a direct flight by Austrian Airlines), especially the return way during the night (we had the bad luck to be seated near loud people). The flight attendants were very unfriendly, the seats old and movies crappy. But what I found delicious was the food!! I could choose the menu when booking the flight so I had exactly what I wanted :).

New York is what I expected! But what I didn’t imagine is how familiar it feels….some parts of Manhattan reminded me of Vienna and even Patrick had felt the same. 6700 km away can mean nothing sometimes. The sky scrapers are looking friendly despite their height and their brown shades are changing in different weather conditions or time of the day.

The apartment has been really nice; the building old but charming and the street noise was an authentic part of it.

We could reach Central Park within 2 minutes and few underground lines within 5 minutes. The host was extremely friendly and helpful.

We managed to visit everything from the list; the weather was ideal and could enjoy every minute. Food was delicious (but expensive!), Whole Foods from Columbus Circle was great and went there daily.
To name some places: we’ve been to Brooklyn via the Bridge, Queens, Connie Island, Staten Island and Manhattan (Little Italy, Chinatown, Central Park and Harlem). Visited the New York Museum (MCNY), MoMA, the Fashion Institute of Technology (Daphne Guinness exhibition), The Garment District (Mood Fabrics, Global Leathers, Magazine Café), 5.th Avenue (Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys), books stores (Strand, Barnes & Noble), Rockefeller Center, the construction site of the WTC, the Chelsea Market and the Highline (truly loved it!).

My New York Bag

I’ve been making this bag especially for my New York trip and I am very pleased with the result as I wanted something to match my day time outfits, light, durable and waterproof. When I first saw the fabric I loved it in an instant. The texture has a special surface, the weight is perfect and the curry color tone brings a warm autumn feeling.

I’ve lined it with a black-grey metallic fabric, has an inside pocket and the bottom is reinforced with a solid rubber piece so that the bag can stand even if it has very few objects inside.

The advantage of its size is that I can carry as many magazines, food and other personal belongings during the long distance flights as well have it empty before starting a city spree and fill it along the day.

I first got to know Gabriele Rigby, the designer/behind the fashion label Fröhlich, this October as I/was selling a sewing machine and she was the first one answering my ad.
We used to sell our collections in the same designers store in Vienna (Designer Werkstatt) but I never had the occasion to meet her. When she came to pick up the sewing machine she took the chance to see my atelier and work, we talked a bit about our professions and spontaneously asked me to sew her a custom brown wristlet as she loves this color and leather, in general.

I was really happy to make the wristlet clutch and when I delivered it to her store I took with me some bags in case she would like to sell them besides her clothing collection.

I didn’t know how her store looked like and as soon as I saw it I found it very charming! Bright, cozy, refreshing, creative. My clutches got a beautiful place in the window and they looked like they very much belong there, blending with Gabi’s design and place. If you wish to visit her store, it is open every Friday from 2-6.30 pm, every Saturday of the month from 11 am-3 pm or by appointment.

After secretly following their ascending evolution and admiring everything they offer in the online shop, this spring I took the initiative and approached them for a potential collaboration.
To my positive surprise, they answered fast and set an interview 2 weeks later in Bucharest. Our first talk impressed me as the manager explain me in detail how the concept works from the products selection (there are more experts evaluating each piece) till the customer care and further promotion channels they organize.
From the selected designers their essential request is to provide the best product quality and communication punctuality. In exchange for their services the best part is that their commission is minimal and the end price is equal to the one in the designer's/artist's ateliers. The shipping is free and every package is beautifully wrapped, showing like a present. For the moment, they’re only shipping within Romania but in the future they’ll start with other countries. My personal opinion is that I consider Molecule F as being the best online fashion & art platform in Eastern Europe as well I have to admit and say that in Austria there is none existing (at the moment) to compete with them.

The acceptance in their team was very flattering for me. To be among the Romanian fashion elite is an important step in my carrier and I’m glad that my work is appreciated in Austria where I live as well in my home land.

It took about 4 months to design and sew a line of exclusive clutches and set all the legal details.

On 11.10.11 my collection has been officially launched with a press release.

I’ve got to know Kamila in August when she came to my atelier to ask me to restyle an outfit for a wedding reception. She liked the result and ever since she drops by almost once a week to check my latest work. Few days ago she saw a coat that matches her taste, lifestyle and personality.

Asked me to readjust in on her figure around the shoulders by taking off the pads and few centimeters. When she tried it on she was happy with the result and so do I :)

Jeannette bought this parka last week and told me that if we don’t find a good solution for a higher quality look, she won’t like to wear it.

We decided to put a style emphasis on the hood’s look and small details at the fasteners. Otherwise she liked the color, design and casual character.
We agreed to replace the fake fur for a natural one and the fabric loops for leather ones.

Jeannette loves violet, plum, lavender and wild berries colours and asked me a couple of months ago if I can get some leather in a similar shade as she would love to have a wristlet.
When I found what she was looking for, I invited her over my atelier and showed her some colour & leather combinations that would match and offer an individual look, fitting her personality and wardrobe.

I very much liked the brown mixed with violet as autumn was about to start as well red browns always match her hair shades.

I first got to know Jeannette about 1 year ago in the same time when I moved my atelier to another address. She was one of the first persons that entered in my studio to have a look at my work and ever since we keep collaborating. She loves the result of my work but it all turns out nice also because she brings good ideas fitting her personality and personal wishes. Inexplicably, depending on the customer’s energy my working process could be smooth, pleasant or difficult and tiring. That’s something that other friends of mine such as designers/tailors experience. In Jeannette’s case, I work with pleasure and I never try to impose my directions but she takes my advices very aware of the positive result. So, I always feel relaxed and enjoy every step. I don’t make custom dresses (this subject I will develop in another post) and gladly, Jeannette finds most of my designs fitting. She likes as well to redesign/alter outfits from her wardrobe that she finds boring or unfitting.

In the last 6-7 months she kept asking me to start up a blog where I can document my work with its process and end result. As she is one of my main customers and enthusiastic to share her side of fashion life, I will create a dedicated tag, named Jeannette S.

When Stephanie Levy published our interview attaching a couple of photos of myself, Jeannette felt in love with my new wrap dress.

As she was about to leave to Florence, Italy she gladly bought it and wore it with a lot of joy.

Late Summer Holidays

I seldom find the time to make dresses for myself. But usually, before going on holidays I try to dedicate some days on exclusively doing a couple of outfits for my vacation that will be adequate to the place, time of the year and activities.

This year we have decided to go on an island in the Adriatic Sea, a beautiful part of Croatia and approximate 750km away from Vienna.

This small floral in pastel colors pattern was the first that caught my eye and I definitely knew in the next moment, how the dress will look like as well the accessories that will go with it.

I’ve been once wearing the dress at a corporate event held on a sky scraper roof top in Vienna. The delicate wind and the sunset colors were like an addition to the accessories.
Looking forward wearing it on the island!


I wear it with a very thin under dress

I have decided to make the following dress while thinking of a nice dinner at the yachts harbor. And I was right because there are so many small, charming harbors on the island that is hard to decide where to go for dinner…

The length is irregular that I can avoid stepping on it. The pleats are wide and few; I prefer to wear it with a belt but without could also be an option.

When I first saw the next fabric, I instantly knew that I’ll love to wear it and despite its transparency, the understated shimmer gives a special, watery effect.

I chose to make a floor length, extra wide, pleated dress, in the lower part having the light fabric and the upper part consisting in a heavier garment that will give sustainability.

One day I might try to make a similar dress, entirely out of the light fabric… I think it offers a very delicate touch on the skin, like a summer breeze.
I happily tried to wear it without a lining skirt underneath, so I dared in a remote area of the sea bay. But I won’t do it otherwise…

The dress’s length is irregular, wavy, depending on the sides as I love extra long dresses but dislike to step on them regardless the heels hight.

If you would like to have one of these dresses, don’t hesitate to contact me for further details. As I mostly make one of a kind pieces (unique) I cannot guarantee to have the same fabric but that depends on the stock’s limit.

Early July I’ve decided to go in a trip around Romania (Bucharest, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca) to sightsee and meet people that I’ve promised to visit. While I was having a morning tea in my hotel room in Cluj-Napoca I took the chance to check my emails as I had 15 free minutes until I was about to meet a friend at the reception desk. In my etsy’s inbox I’ve noticed a new message and as I started to carefully read it I was getting very interested about the project that Stephanie Levy was describing. She wrote that she is an American graphic artist/illustrator living in Germany and would like to meet me in Vienna in the following weekend (in 2-3 days from that time) as she read my bio and knows that my work is mainly influence by Vienna, a theme that she built her project on: how the city where some artists live in is influencing their work. She will be travelling for 12 months in 12 different European cities where she will interview some artists that feel connected to their living environment. Vienna has been the first city to open her project and I am happy for this decision as she fully enjoyed the trip.

We’ve met on a cloudy Saturday of July and despite the weather she brought a lot a sun in my atelier. At first, I was extremely nervous as I don’t like to speak about myself and especially not to have my voice recorded. But all these worries vanished as she was very relaxed, open and kind. She told me nice, small stories about herself and this help me to have no problem speaking about my life having open, free feelings. Despite designing in different fields, our jobs have many similarities and exchanging opinions was very energising.

During our talk, she said that a lot of people would like to know the artist’s life who makes a product they see and like as well the back story of both: the artist's and the product's. So, she warmly advised me to start up a blog and I immediately knew that it makes sense: I as well like to see behind the scenes and find inspiration from other stories, lifestyles and "making of" processes.

For months, a customer of mine had been asking me several times to start up a blog where I can document my work but the thought of having an additional work, it was not was I was looking for; at least not this year. But both, finally convinced me so I’ve launched my blog 2 weeks after my interview with Stephanie.

My Vienna

Before taking the final decision to remain in Vienna I knew the city from a tourist point of view. By then, I’ve been travelling to more than 20 countries and about 35 cities; those that I remember to have very much liked are Copenhagen, Odessa, Zürich, Amsterdam, Paris, Manchester, Istanbul, Prague, Budapest, Rijeka and Vienna.
Arriving in Vienna I didn’t know how my life will develop; I had a plan but wasn’t fixed on it. I knew that the faith will bring me where I wish the most to be. With the help of a very good friend of mine, Michael Müller, I chose Vienna against Paris or Zürich. I love French language in comparison to German and it would have been very practical to pick Paris but there I knew that there is nobody to count on, I didn’t know anyone besides my dear cousin that has a family on her own.
On the 5th of October 2002 with my whole life in a couple of luggage I arrived at Vienna’s airport, Schwechat. Michael and his wife Ilse were waiting me at the airport and that was the first sign that I felt it was a good decision. That day was wonderful but also exhausting and a bit strange as we met a relative of Ilse and I’ve been asked not to tell her that I have the intention to remain in Austria. She justified that their families don’t want to help people migrating to their country. I saw it as a contradiction as Ilse and Michael were very open minded, I didn’t/feel like an immigrant (and even if) and why some of their relatives would think so wrong?! I tried to keep this “secret” over dinner with that relative (she was paralyzed on one side) and we later went to Vienna’s long night of museums (Lange Nacht der Museen); it was so beautiful and loved the exhibited art from all the museums from MQ!

Years passed by, Michael is still one of my best friends and as he witnessed my youth’s and carrier’s development he is still very supportive and proud. Despite that I was alone in a big city, without any additional help but my own ambition I always knew that in any situation I could count on someone! And that was Michael.

Vienna remains the same charming, clean, organized city as I already knew from the first time I’ve seen it in 1999. Every day the city somehow looks different, expressive and distinctive… I love the Sundays as it is very quiet but also busy weekdays with open shops and city noise. Every time I go in the First District I feel like a tourist in a city tour as everything looks different, fresh and new but somehow the same as the flair is unique.

The strange approach that some people have against foreigners still remains and unfortunately it personally hit me more than a couple of times along the last years. I have been extremely suffering because I didn’t understand how a country where Hitler was born and a nation that actively took part in his cruel game would have people to repeat his mistakes. Since the day I’ve met my husband I became stronger and more ignorant towards racists and nationalists. And this attitude makes my life so much brighter and I can breathe without having the feeling that I disturb someone!

I love to see more and more foreigners around and slowly Vienna has become a melting pot between almost all nations existing on our Planet. I adore Oriental and Japanese food (especially sushi and California maki), I often shop at the biggest exotic supermarket in Vienna, Prosi, I buy world delicacies at Naschmarkt, I visit international art festivals such as Afrika Tage, Blickfang or Rathausplatz Film Festival and I attend as much as my time allows international music concerts. To me, essential is to be surrounded by quality, diversity and openness regardless the origins.

Due to my profession, I’ve met and keep meeting wonderful Austrians starting with my husband’s family, friends, customers to the officers at governmental offices where I have to solve different documents. What’s amazingly positive is the constant fascination for art in any form. Artists have a privileged position and respect so I’m very lucky to be one of them!

Design inspired by Wienerwald

Vienna plays a big role in my designs. I think that if I would have started my profession in a different place everything would have looked different. But as I love what I make even if I will live somewhere else in the future, the pattern of Vienna will always remain. The second city spirit that is reflected in my work is New York. I’ve never been to New York but I feel some similarities but also a great orchestration, a complementation between the 2 cities.

In Love With Bags

I love bags, in general. When I’m outside, my first look is captured on a person’s bag: men/women. It says a lot about the style sense and individual needs. I personally like clean, polished handbag looks in all sizes but also “crazy” ones with unusual shapes.
I think that a handbag, especially a women’s is a small private universe… confidential and individual. I see it as a combination of a coat’s pocket and a personal, carry with drawer.

In 2006 when I’ve started to work as an independent fashion designer I first began by sewing clothing collections, creating day/evening dresses, skirts, coats, trousers… After 4 years of intense work I decided to try a new twist, something that challenges me as much. I’ve chosen to make bags, more specific shopping bags that look a bit different than the standard.

I didn’t know where this change will take me but I wanted to reflect my designs and creativity into professionally playing with materials and different components. I evolved the idea into trying new models and later, ever since I’ve been making 5 collections.

My production process is relatively long as I usually make unique pieces and models with small variations on the basic patterns depending on the fabrics and colors. I like to invest time to be able to reach my quality target and before starting a new model I always make a prototype that I can visualize what needs to be improved on the finished product.

The bags are on display to be sold in my atelier, Innsbruck, online and soon Bucharest… In each location I chose to have different collections that are matching every shop’s philosophy.

Evening dress from "Sublime" collection

My profession is one of the best things in my life and I feel so blessed having the opportunity to discover and start to love it at a relatively early age. My love and passion for it gives me strength, confidence and lucidity. Nobody can take it away, nothing can make me change my mind and no matter how difficult to manage making a living out of it, I would do the same if I can turn back the time.
The biggest luck I have is that my husband offers me full moral support; every small obstacle or success I feel free to share with him at every hour from the day or night.

When I first decided to take my passion on a professional level it was after I had the chance to study at Michelbeuern institute, the Landesinnung Wien der Mode und Bekleidungstechnik and follow an internship at a couture studio, Temsamani (video).

The learning process has been long and difficult as I had no financial income and I wanted to be 100% ready until I could bring my collection on the market. In the moment I knew the time to start to sell has come, I rented a small studio in the most creative district of Vienna, Spittelberg. At that point, the government gave me chance to finance my start up, offering a small credit without any interest rate, payable on monthly amounts on a length of 4 years. As the credit wasn’t enough to invest in my atelier, I had to sell my lovely car so I could buy professional sewing machines.
In the first 2 years I’ve been sharing my atelier with a painter girlfriend and the whole creative space was giving me power and joy to continue. I was working from 8am till almost midnight.

The first sales arrived 3 months after I opened the atelier, until that time I didn’t feel less enthusiastic despite people continuously asking me how many pieces I sell every day… I didn’t expect to get lots of money, all I was happy with was the fact that I’ve made my dream come true. It was frustrating that those people blaming me that I chose the wrong profession as long as I don’t earn as much as a salary were not keen to support me in any way. I wasn’t expecting anyone’s support but I didn’t want to be put down. My first customers were passers-by such as Austrians and tourists (mostly German, American and Canadian). They were excited about my collection, the fact that each piece was one of a kind and produced exclusively by me. The atelier had a gallery where I could sew everything and on the lower floor I could exhibit the items. So, everything was transparent and people love this!

Despite my first sales, the taxes in Austria are very high regardless the income so the next years were not easy as everything I was getting in, had to go on monthly bills.
I love to have the best tools and great fabric quality because that’s the way I can work easy and enjoyable plus the result is complimented so most of my income goes to support that.

Today, after 5 years of fashion design I can say that I never regret one second choosing this way. It’s very soul rewarding and a great challenge! My friends are very proud and happy for me, especially Willi Pichler, a great friend that has been all along the way and appreciatively witnessed all my steps.
I sell my items in my atelier as well in other boutiques in Vienna, Innsbruck and soon Bucharest. I like to participate in good projects organized together with other creative artists so every year I had the chance to take part in those that I knew I'll enjoy:

I love my atelier and spending 8-11h/day designing, sewing, meeting customers or documenting myself for new ideas or projects, makes it feel like it’s my second home.

From Mondays to Fridays I work constantly by choosing to have very few breaks, on Saturdays I try to fit small tasks as I usually stay in 2-5hours. Sunday is the main cleaning and organizing day; I’m cleaning the working space daily but at the end of the week I take care of the side areas as well.

I’ve moved in Sievering about 15 months ago after I’ve been working for 4 years in Spittelberg, the 7.th District. I’m very happy about this choice as I get plenty of natural and sun light, the 50sm are enough to be able to work, showcase my items as well having a sitting area where I take my lunch or a coffee.

I’m organizing twice a year small events where I invite my friends and customers to see new pieces and enjoy the atmosphere with (mostly live) music, drinks and snacks.

The area surrounding the atelier is very peaceful and green, the houses have an elegant architecture with pretty gardens and the local people are very relaxed, friendly and polite. The most important is that my atelier has all what it takes to be able to fully focus on my work as well have the freedom to set my ideas into practice.

My mother and grandmother enhanced my awareness to stylish and harmonious dressing in an understated form to create a respectable and admirable appearance. My grandfather has been working for many years as an inspector at the national railway company so, for my grandmother choosing her daily & special occasion wardrobe was very important. She was 25 years younger than my grandfather, her profession being inspector’s wife and mother brought her a lot of joy and pride. People’s scrutiny was starting from her outfit’s sight, it first mattered the way she was dressed and after that they were interested in different themed dialogues.

My mother as a teacher, now in pension, had lived the same pattern in the way she was dressing. Both, my grandmother and mother loved to look “right” and this attitude I’ve started to learn at an early age without being imposed or forced.
Someone’s first appearance is what people perceive foremost, could sound superficial but this is true in most situations.
Despite my mother’s salary as a teacher (one of the lowest in the Romanian system) she always found ways how to look elegant and radiant. She added in her wardrobe as much creativity as possible as she couldn’t present herself in front of the pupils’ class dressed oftener than twice in the same outfit.
So, I think that elegance has to come with the right attitude: confident and cordial.

Living since almost 10 years in Vienna, Austria I notice every day that the society’s mentality is no different than the Romanian’s from the past and present. The difference is that remaining a forever foreigner there are more stereotypes than in my country but it all starts with the first glance. I don’t feel any pressure because I like to know that I first dress for myself, my heart and confidence and if people around me would like it, even better!

Proud About My Origins, Part III

My teenager years were great: I was liked, accepted, admired, felt free inside my soul and could express my talents in many forms. I was a member at the local teeny club for tapestry and chess (even went to summer tournaments) as well took volley, dance, aerobic and modeling classes.
My mother encouraged and offered us full support to enter one of the most prestigious schools in Bucharest, Scoala Centrala. To be able to start attending the gymnasium we had to pass a strict French language exam so we took the preparations with maximum determination and succeeded! I still keep contact with the majority of our colleagues; it has been a great school and environment.

One of the most important times of my life is the attendance at the Sunday school, a wonderful church community that guided us towards God and their teachings kept my morality high all along my life. My mother’s education and the Sunday school are the only two factors that formed me to become who I am today, a person that loves God and tries to live after His will.
I don’t have many relatives so the most pregnant family figures are my mother, my sister and my cousin Kim.
I have 4 half sisters and 1 half brother, they’re very smart and sweet but our contact was almost 0 until a couple of years ago since it slightly raised.

The decision to remain in Austria was unplanned and came as a shock to my friends.

I was 21 when my life changed to a different direction. At that time I was studying Business Management at the Media University, was working for over 1 year at the national television station (TVR) and managed a fashion boutique in the city center.

I had the chance to see the most of Europe due to a very special person that crossed my life.

As soon as my relationship with Sean (a British man living in Romania for 17 years) ended, I found myself confused and misplaced. My lifestyle besides him was very different to the one I was about to experience on my own, in Bucharest. I felt that leaving to a Western country my life comprehension and attitude will be rather fitting to the ones there.

I was right about this matter but there are many downsides that I’ve learned to ignore so I won’t mention.
I don’t feel like I belong to certain group, society or country. Now, I can say that I could live anywhere in this world. And that’s because I found my 2 big loves, mind comfort and soul compass: my husband Patrick and my profession, fashion design. Having both in my life I could be happy anywhere, anytime!

Because of my skin color along my first 9 years of life I have experienced many humiliations from the teachers, beatings from other school kids, offensive language every time we passed somebody angry for seeing us.

A horrible situation was when a couple of times a month the local grocery store was receiving a food delivery: only one type such as chicken meat or milk or eggs …or bread... Queues were formed 5-8 hours before the actually delivery was taken place and people were starting to wait from 4-5 am. My mother was one of them and when she was getting exhausted, she was asking either me or my sister to take her place. As soon as I arrived, ready to sit on the little chair that my mother prepared for me, people were maddened to see me, screaming : ”Go back to Africa, why have you come here to eat our food?!”.

The worst picture in my mind remains the brutal beating that my mother took from the neighbor couple living next to our door (apartments were divided by the elevator). They did it as a punishment for having black children. Ever since, my mother’s life has changed completely: she started to have panic attacks, depressions, eating disorders and still can’t walk longer than 200m. As she reported the attack to the authorities, the result was a big house party of the beaters with the investigating police men. The case was moved to court but my mother had to drop it due to medical reasons.

Sometimes I was told: “Girls, you have no guilt that your mother was a slut!” opinion that I couldn’t really understand at the age of 5-6.
Most of my mother’s girlfriends were inviting her to a chat & coffee mentioning: ”But please, don’t take the girls because the neighbors will see them!”
Reason for her to become almost friendless but happy to confer her time, care and love on us.
Every time we came home crying from school, the next morning she was in the inspector’s office to give a written complaint. She was a fighter and this is what I took from her, the spirit of justice.

Despite all the haters that we had the bad luck to meet, I nicely remember:

all the summer camps that we went in (always twice per summer in the mountains) where we were meeting wonderful kids and caretakers…

the places where my mother had job delegations and always took us with her, mostly in the country side with wonderful, simple peasants that never saw our skin color and spoiled us with fresh fruits and vegs ( I very well remember Ilisesti, Suceava)…

After the 1989’s Revolution this situation has change to almost the opposite and all the new horizons have become the biggest attraction. The Revolution brought this change into my life as well but besides this, as a child I didn’t feel many other differences between before and after: I had the same family, friends and dreams.

“Where are you from?” This question I’ve been asked around 4000 times in the last 9,8 years since I live in Austria and despite I tend to answer: “From Planet Earth!” I have to stay polite but give an unsatisfying answer: “From Romania!”. My answer, mostly leads to a series of curious questions and every time I regret giving the honest answer that precedes to them because it’s really tiring…

I was born in Bucharest on a snowy December day of the year 1980. I have a twin sister, Denise that arrived 10 minutes before me and despite her prior delivery, some people say that the second born is actually the older one. It could be true as she weighted 18oo gr. and I, 2200 gr. Our parents met during their university studies, my mother is Ukrainian and my father, Nigerian. Due to their origins they are a mix of other nations that colonized their land. My sister and I were raised by our mother as she refused to leave Romania and her parents (that lived in Bucharest) to follow together with us, our hot tempered father to Lagos. I am very happy about her decision despite the difficulties of not having a father besides.

We’ve spent our childhood in a nice, working class neighborhood and during communism, the society was divided between the working and intellectual class. Inside the two classes it was another division between the party and Securitatea members and the non members. Both my parents are intellectuals who tried to keep the distance from politics and despite small issues, we’ve blended very well in our community and people were respecting my mother, almost all our neighbors calling her “the professor” so at one point that became a nick name and very few knew her name.

My childhood went on a relatively normal path, quite different as the majority for not having a father and being of a different skin color. My mother’s brother never forgave her for having us. My grandmother was torn between the love for her son and the love for us and many times she had to keep our beautiful relation as secret to his family (my aunt and cousins).

During communism, most of the people feared and rejected what was new, special and different. Behavior that I somehow understand as the outside world contact was limited or forbidden by Ceausescu. In the early 80’ my mother lost her job as a teacher for having us, as it meant of being immoral to have children with a black man. She regained her job with apologies at the same school after the revolution.
